The last princess of a hidden dragon kingdom crosses into our world and finds her only hope behind a coffee-shop counter.

Our take

A dragon princess crosses worlds to find a barista

Evanna, the last princess of a hidden dragon realm, slips into our world hunting for a legendary traitor and finds Braxton instead: a broke, sick, hard-working coffee-shop guy whose presence lights up her talisman. Readers like the dragons with real personality, the dual-POV banter, and an ending that pushes them straight into book two. Critics say it plays like setup, with instant attraction and less plot than it needs. We'd hand it to readers who want a playful, free on-ramp into a finished five-book dragon-rider romance, where later books rate even higher.

Who it's for: New-adult romantasy readers who want fated mates, banter and dragons with personality, and don't mind a setup-heavy first book.

If you liked: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, Raven Kennedy

Heads-up: Some on-page spice (publisher says 17+), lots of cursing, and a cliffhanger; previously titled Dragon Eye.

Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass #1

by Sarah J. Maas

Our pick

Celaena Sardothien, an eighteen-year-old assassin pulled from a prison mine, must win a deadly contest to become the king's champion. The start of a long series that grows into a full epic, with plenty of romance.

The Way of Kings

The Stormlight Archive #1

by Brandon Sanderson

Our pick

A slave soldier, a scholar with a secret and a highprince haunted by visions are pulled into a war on a storm-battered world. A huge, slow-building epic that pays off enormously; book one of the Stormlight Archive.

Mistborn: The Final Empire

Mistborn #1

by Brandon Sanderson

Our pick

In a world of ash and mist ruled by an immortal tyrant, a street thief discovers she can burn metals for power and joins a crew planning the ultimate heist: overthrowing the Lord Ruler. The classic first Sanderson.

Dungeon Crawler Carl

Dungeon Crawler Carl #1

by Matt Dinniman

Our pick ★★★★★

When an alien game show flattens Earth's buildings, Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, are dropped into a deadly televised dungeon where every floor gets stranger. Brutal, very funny LitRPG that wins over people who've never read LitRPG.
