Earth has run out of the rare elements that power its technology, and a new industry rises in space to find more. Space opera with a focus on the people doing the work.

Our take

Blue-collar space mining with a saboteur aboard

Thea Watts was going to sell her late father's mining ship. Then the corporation that owns the asteroid belt lowballed her, and she decided to fly it herself, with a scrappy crew, a dying industry and ships blowing up under strange circumstances. Kirkus and Foreword both praised the near-future setting, where rare earth minerals are the gold rush, and Thea's turn from bitter dropout to captain. Readers call it a quick, easy read with a crew you actually remember. We'd hand this to anyone who wants The Expanse's working-class grit at a smaller, more personal scale. Free is an easy yes.

Who it's for: Readers who like grounded, near-future space stories about crews, corporations and a mystery on board.

If you liked: Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey, Firefly

Heads-up: Ends on a cliffhanger and we couldn't confirm books 2 and 3 are out yet. Some salty language; the saboteur is guessable.
