Three books free: technology has replaced magic, and the few people left with dragon blood are feared and hunted for their powers.

Our take

Fighter pilots, a waking sorceress and a sarcastic sword

Dragon Blood opens with Ridge, a cocky fighter pilot exiled to run a remote prison mine, who crosses paths with Sardelle, a sorceress waking after three centuries into a world that now hunts her kind. Readers keep coming back for the banter, the mix of propeller planes and old magic, and Jaxi, a snarky sentient sword who steals scenes. It's light, quick and funny rather than deep: the romance moves fast and the magic rarely costs much. We picked this free three-book bundle because it's the easiest way to test-drive an author with a long, finished backlist.

Who it's for: Readers who want breezy, humorous steampunk-flavored fantasy with romance and found-family banter rather than grimdark.

If you liked: Lindsay Buroker's The Emperor's Edge, Ilona Andrews

Heads-up: Fast romance with one open-door scene in book 1; book 2 shifts to new leads, which some readers liked less.

The Way of Kings

The Stormlight Archive #1

by Brandon Sanderson

Our pick

A slave soldier, a scholar with a secret and a highprince haunted by visions are pulled into a war on a storm-battered world. A huge, slow-building epic that pays off enormously; book one of the Stormlight Archive.
Fantasy
Mistborn: The Final Empire

Mistborn #1

by Brandon Sanderson

Our pick

In a world of ash and mist ruled by an immortal tyrant, a street thief discovers she can burn metals for power and joins a crew planning the ultimate heist: overthrowing the Lord Ruler. The classic first Sanderson.
Fantasy
Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass #1

by Sarah J. Maas

Our pick

Celaena Sardothien, an eighteen-year-old assassin pulled from a prison mine, must win a deadly contest to become the king's champion. The start of a long series that grows into a full epic, with plenty of romance.
Fantasy
Dungeon Crawler Carl

Dungeon Crawler Carl #1

by Matt Dinniman

Our pick ★★★★★

When an alien game show flattens Earth's buildings, Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, are dropped into a deadly televised dungeon where every floor gets stranger. Brutal, very funny LitRPG that wins over people who've never read LitRPG.
