A hedge witch's spell goes wrong and ties her magic to Anne Boleyn, pulling her into Henry VIII's glittering, deadly court as a witch hunt closes in.

Our take

Anne Boleyn's rise, steered by a hedge witch

Hugo and Nebula winner Nancy Kress turns to Tudor England, and the twist is a good one: a cunning woman's botched spell binds her to Anne Boleyn as her magical partner, just as Henry VIII starts to circle. Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review, singling out the lavish court revels, the carefully shaded characters and the deep well of period detail, and early Kindle readers are rating it well. We picked it because it's a rare thing at this price, a big-name author's new historical fantasy, and we'd hand it to anyone who wants their Tudor intrigue with a dash of witchcraft.

Who it's for: Readers who love Tudor court drama and want a grounded, character-driven witch story rather than a high-magic romp.

If you liked: A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, A Secret History of Witches by Louisa Morgan

Heads-up: Brand-new release (Nov 2026) and book 1 of a planned two-book series; it covers Anne's rise and fall, so history is the spoiler.
